There are days when publishing feels like a business. There are other days when it feels like a séance.
As the release date for my new book, Houdini: The Man Who Died Twice, approached, something strange happened on Amazon. The Kindle edition was there. The listing existed. The paperback was active behind the scenes. And yet, when readers tried to find the paperback on Amazon’s public page, it had vanished.
A disappearing act.
Naturally, I have questions.
Did Houdini himself decide the paperback needed one final escape before launch? Did the old spiritualists, furious at being exposed again, gather around a table, dim the lights, and whisper, “Not this time, Harry”? Did some invisible hand in the Amazon catalog system hide the book behind the curtain?
Amazon has identified the issue as an internal catalog error, which is a much less dramatic explanation than a spectral conspiracy. But after weeks of watching the paperback appear active on one side of the system while remaining unavailable to readers on the other, I admit the haunting theory has charm.
And honestly, it is almost too fitting.
This is a book about mystery, misdirection, documents that do not match, official explanations that do not quite hold, and a death story that has managed to evade scrutiny for a century. So perhaps it was inevitable that the paperback would stage its own little disappearance just before release.
Still, unlike Houdini, I would very much like the paperback to reappear.
